Last week, Spotify announced it would introduce a new program for selected acts in its Spotify For Artists program that would allow independent artists who own their own copyrights to directly upload their music to the streaming service, bypassing traditional digital distribution companies.
Now, Ditto Music -- a U.K.-based digital distributor that services music on behalf of 150,000-plus artists worldwide -- announced a new tool that follows Spotify's announcement. The tool, Ditto Plus, effectively wraps up all of Ditto's label-support and distribution offerings -- public relations, social media support, creative design, digital marketing, radio promotion and playlist pitching -- into one offering, which the company says will be akin to major-label support.
"It's an exciting time for independent music and its never been more important for artists to have the right team backing them," Ditto CEO Lee Parsons said in a statement. "Ditto pride ourselves in having one of the most successful track records in the business for emerging talent. With 19 global offices, we are opening up these tools to even more artists and our amazing team are here to work with them, whatever stage they are in their career."
Ditto also says that its Plus deals will give artists a better, "fairer" royalty rate, with no upfront fee. (Spotify's offer for direct uploads is also free for its Spotify For Artists clients, with a higher royalty rate.) Ditto will keep a smaller percentage and hand artists more of the label royalty in these cases.
Ditto says that its new offering will be open to artists, managers and independent labels.
