Apple Music gave Billie Eilish three awards this week, but a report on The Hollywood Reporter suggests that it wants to give her a lot more than that: $25m. Well, not to Eilish specifically, but to the producers of a documentary about her rise to fame, in exchange for the exclusive rights to distribute it through Apple tv+.
“The film, which has already been shot, was directed by R.J. Cutler and produced in collaboration with Eilish’s label, Interscope Records, for a budget that one source pegs as being between $1 million and $2 million,” claimed THR, citing multiple sources for the $25m price tag for the documentary rights. Not a bad return on investment, eh?
The documentary is expected to launch in 2020. The news emerged as Apple aired its live stream of Eilish’s performance for the Apple Music Awards, from the Steve Jobs Theater at the company’s global HQ. The stripped-back acoustic performance (which is excellent, by the way: Eilish apologised to fans for not giving them a full gig, but seeing her songs in this different context only strengthens the awareness that she’s the real deal) will also be available to watch on archive.
