Apple issued its now-traditional new year’s press release celebrating the holiday performance of its App Store, but this time it has widened the net to its entire services division. The App Store gets the specific stats, still: “App Store customers spent a record $1.42 billion between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, a 16 percent increase over last year, and $386 million on New Year’s Day 2020 alone, a 20 percent increase over last year and a new single-day record,” announced Apple.
Apple’s announcement yesterday included a section on Apple Music, but no new figures for that bar the fact that more than 50% of listeners have used its new time-synced lyrics feature on iOS 13. By our reckoning, Apple Music should have reached the milestone of 70 million subscribers by the end of 2019, but we’ll have to wait a bit longer for confirmation.
Other stats from the release: Apple Podcasts now has a catalogue of more than 800k shows – a good measure of the overall podcasts market, since very few shows aren’t available on Apple – while the Apple News app has more than 100 million monthly active users.
