    Bilibili began as a streaming platform for animation and gaming, but now hosts a much wider range of video, including music – and while Bilibili’s repository of buzzy, mid-length content makes comparisons to YouTube tempting, Bilibili is very different in a few crucial ways.
    One of Bilibili’s interesting – and initially disorientating – interactive features is that real-time comments from viewers are overlaid on the video as it plays. They’re known as “bullet comments” (they rapidly fire across the screen en masse) and encourage creative fan interactivity and excitement amongst Bilibili’s mainly Gen-Z user base: 80% of users were born after 1995.
    Bilibili also has a rich remixing culture: successful videos can result in thousands of weird and fun mashups.
    Having announced that the platform has 197.2m MAUs in its Q3 results, it was revealed this week that one of Bilibilli’s most successful videos of 2020 was produced by the platform itself: a four-hour New Year’s Eve video. A mixture of animation, Bilibili creator content, virtual idol performances, and pop music – including a collaboration between pianist Lang Lang and Marvel Studios – it too embraced the spirit of remixing and fan creativity, noting that the video is freely downloadable for “secondary creation.”
